Twilight and why there is no "beautiful side of evil"

I think it is pretty well known just how popular the Twilight saga has become. Just about everyone has read these books, and if not, they have certainly heard of them. I was one of those people, one of those who became completely obsessed with the series, I absolutely fell in love with these books.

Well, I am a Christian and I really struggled with this issue for awhile. After I read the books the first time I felt like God was telling me to get rid of them. But I didn't, I couldn't, then. I had such an obsession and strong love for them there was no way. I didn't want to, plain and simple. But He kept pressing. So finally, begrudgingly, I packed them up to sell. That was my first mistake. I should have obeyed God and thrown them out, but my flesh couldn't, and at the time, it was stronger. Well, because they sat in a bag in my room for weeks, that temptation was still there. Not to mention every single one of my friends read them as well and are just as into them as I am. So eventually I gave back in and got them back out and started reading again.

At first, nothing changed. I loved the books even more and was becoming obsessed all over again. But then, strange things started happening to me...like, every single night I would wake up over and over throughout the night in hot spells, drenched in sweat. Now, this is very abnormal for me, I am only 19! But, I didn't really think anything of it. Well, after a few days, i began to have other things begin happening to me. Every time I was home alone i would hear voices and other unusual noises. I was completely seized with a spirit of fear and didn't know what to do. I tried to just forget about it, and continued reading the books. Well, it continued bothering me what was happening so I talked to my mother about it. She told me I needed to choose what I wanted more - God's way, or mine. I wasn't spending time every day with God like I should be, so the devil didn't have to work hard to tempt me. I had caused an open door when I picked up those books and I was the only one who could close it. The devil had legal right to torment me because I had let him in! Ephesians 4:27 says: "Leave no such room or foothold for the devil, give no opportunity to him."

I really want to share with you some of my main reasons for believing Twilight is much more evil that we are being led to think. Yes, it is nicely packaged - the devil always starts out pretty and leads us deeper into deception. He paints Twilight as a harmless love story, just like Stephenie Meyer does. But it says in 2 Corinthians 11:14-15: "And it is no wonder, for Satan himself masquarades as an angel of light; So it is not surprising if his servants also masquarade as ministers of righteousness. But their end will correspond with their deeds."

It all started on the night of June 1, 2003 when author Stephenie Meyer had a dream. She is quoted on her website as saying, "I woke up (on that June 2nd) from a very vivid dream. In my dream, two people were having an intense conversation in a meadow in the woods. One of these people was just your average girl. The other person was fantastically beautiful, sparkly, and a vampire. They were discussing the difficulties inherent in the facts that A) they were falling in love with each other while B) the vampire was particularly attracted to the scent of her blood, and was having a difficult time restraining himself from killing her immediately."
She has also been quoted, saying, "I may have had some help from at least one "terrifying" spirit guide."

One of my main problems with this series is that it portrays there can be a "good" side to evil. That is a huge lie from the devil! Edward cannot be good, he is a vampire. In the occult, vampires are physical manifestations of diabolically empowered entities, undead, aka - demons! Edward is described at the end (or near it), to be an incubus. This is a perverted occult concept. According to Satanists, an incubus is believed to be a dark supernatural entity that is able to manifest itself and engage in sexual relations with a woman. Clearly, that is not something God wants his children glorifying. Deuteronomy 18:10-12 says, "There shall not be found among you anyone who makes his son or daughter pass through the fire, or who uses divination, or is a soothsayer, or an augur, or a sorcerer, or a charmer, or a medium, or a wizard or a necromancer. For all who do these things are an abomination to the Lord, and it is because of these abominable practices that the Lord your God is driving them out before you."
Well, many characters in these novels posses supernatural abilities, such as:

  • mind-reading
  • automatic writing (writing performed without conscious thought or deliberation, typing by means as a medium for spirits or psychic forces)
  • levitation
  • lycanthropy (the magical ability to assume the form and characteristics of a wolf)
  • precognition (knowledge of something in advance of its occurrence, especially by extrasensory perception)
  • clairvoyance (the supposed power to see objects or events that cannot be perceived by the senses)
  • super strength, hearing, and speed
Throughout the books it is known that Edward and his coven (which is literally defined as meaning an assembly of witches, and this word is used throughout all four books to describe various groups of vampires), readily drink the blood of animals (the "non-vegetarian" vampires not stopping with just the blood from animals). But you see, God repeatedly forbids the occult practice of drinking any kind of blood. Genesis 9:4 says, "But you shall not eat flesh with the life of it, which is the blood." Likewise, Leviticus 17:14 says, "As for the life of all flesh, the blood of it represents the life of it; therefore I said to the Istraelites, You shall partake of the blood of NO KIND of flesh, for the life of all flesh is its blood. Whoever eats of it shall be cut off."

You see, there is NO "beautiful side of evil". Sin is sin, evil is evil. "Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil; that put darkness for light, and light for darkness; that put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter! Woe unto them that are wise in their own eyes, and prudent in their own sight!" - Isaiah 5:20-21
You can't take an evil being/entity and have him aim to be good. He is cursed! Just like demons try to portray themselves as harmless or "good" dark spirits, so does Meyers in these characters. God specifically warns us against this type of thinking. 1 Timothy 4:1 "But the Holy Spirit distinctly and expressly declares that in latter times some will turn away from the faith, giving attention to deluding and seducing spirits and doctrines that demons teach." So Stephenie Meyer paints this beautiful picture in her books of Edward who is an evil being, yet struggling to be good. Well I'm sorry but a demon by any other name is still a demon!

Listen to what she confessed in one interview:
"I actually did have a dream after Twilight was finished of Edward coming to visit me - only I had gotten it wrong and he did drink blood like every other vampire and you couldn't live on animals the way I'd written it. We had this conversation and he was terrifying."
I think its obvious what really visited Meyers throughout her dreams. It says in 2 Corinthians 11:3 "But I am afraid that just as Eve was deceived by the serpent's cunning, your minds may somehow be led astray from your sincere and pure devotion to Christ."

Are you starting to see now why these seemingly harmless books are really very dangerous? Let me continue what happened with me. I did stop reading the books after my talk with my mother, but they stayed in my room beside my bed. Well, i continued to be tormented. After a couple more days of this, I was finally willing to do whatever it took to stop these attacks from the devil. I told my mother what was still going on and she told me that until I got rid of the thing/things in my life that were allowing the devil's power to have a hold on me, I wouldn't be free.

There are essentially three (basic) steps to breaking strongholds of bondage in your life through spiritual warfare. And the reason you MUST do spiritual warfare is because, "For we are not wrestling with flesh and blood, but against the despotisms, against the powers, against this master spirits who are the world rulers of this present darkness against the spirit forces of wickedness in the heavenly sphere." Ephesians 6:12

Step one is basically realizing who you are in Christ and the authority you have, through Him, over your own life. John 8:32 says, "And you will know the Truth, and the Truth will set you free!" The Word of God is the only way to come against the lies of the devil.

The second step is to cut off all the areas in our lives where we have given Satan legal rights to opress us and keep us in bondage. I had to confess to God that I knew reading those books was wrong. As well as watching certain movies, and listening to certain music. I basically had to do some "house-cleaning" in my life. If I didn't remove these things then they would continue to be open doors for evil to enter my life. Its like I read in this excerpt:
"An unholy vow is like a spiritual signature that the enemy uses as legal right to gain access into our lives. But demonic vows can also be made unconciously just by getting curious about the occult and watching horror films or reading forbidden materials. Those kinds of things give the enemy your spiritual signature; it tells Satan, "Yes, I'm interested in your world. Tell me more." And that gives him the legal right to enter in even though we didn't think we were doing anything blatantly wrong."
By reading books like Twilight about things of the occult and darkness, I had done this. So I decided to completely get rid of the books. I believe that physical objects can carry spiritual value. It says in Deuteronomy 7:26 "Nor shall you bring an abomination into your house, lest you be doomed to destruction like it. You shall utterly detest it and abhor it, for it IS an accursed thing."

And I believe that step three is to turn to God and no longer mess with these things. Like James 4:7 says, "Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you." So now, when the devil tries to tempt me, if I draw near to God, he will leave! Spiritual warfare is about guarding our minds and the pathways of our hearts for God when Satan tempts us and fighting back against him.

So, one night before I went to bed I began reading in two books, daily devotionals, to help me. I prayed for God to help me to be able to let go of these things that had such a hold on me. And then for His strength to stay away from them. I didn't wake up one single time that night - or since then.

One song that I play over and over because the words are so powerful to me is called Shake Yourself Loose. The lyrics go like this:
Said you been bound up, lookin for a way to break free. Devil's had you tied up, listen to these words from me. Your situation may seem hopeless but its not the end. Though you are burdened and have shackles on your feet, I want you to know you're about to break loose! Jesus took the keys and gave them to you. So shake loose, everything that binds you up, who told you that you can't make it? When God says that you can shake it. - I heard that Satan had you bound, no you don't have to stay, yes you can leave today! Just like in the Bible days, when men began to pray, those jail cells start to shaken, those chains a start to breakin!  - Don't let the enemy keep you in bondage, praise your way through, shake loose! I got the key, free at last!"

Well, before I went to sleep I set all my Twilight books outside my bedroom door and told my mother I didn't really know how I should get rid of them but she could do whatever she wanted with them. When I got home from work the next day, she told me that she, my sister, and my father had had a book burning. Hahaha! I was kind of stunned at first, but that is actually very scriptural. See, throwing them away does get rid of them, but it doesn't completely destroy their power. It actually instructs in the Bible TO burn objects of the occult. Deuteronomy 7:25 says, "You must burn their idols in fire, and you must not covet the sliver or gold that covers them. You must not take it or it will become a trap to you, for it is detestable to the Lord your God." Also in Acts 19:18-19 it says, "Many also of those who were now believers came making full confession and thoroughly exposing their former deceptive and evil practices. And many of those who had practiced curious, magical arts collected their books and throwing them, book after book, on the pile burned them in the sight of everybody. When they counted the value of them, they found it amounted to 50,000 pieces of silver. (about $9,300)"

Something very interesting happened though as they burned the books. The fire blazed, and burned the pages, but the smoke smoldered a very strange color, it burned a bright yellow/dull green. Now, this may not have been anything at all, but that is quite unusual. Usually the only thing that burns this color is sulfur, which is not found in paper! But, it is found in Hell...as it says in Revelation 21:8 "But the cowards, unbelievers, the corrupt, murderers, the immoral, the practicers of magical arts, the idolaters, and all liars - their fate is in the fiery lake of burning sulfur. This is the second death."

Another strange thing is that they said every now and then a smell would come from the fire that was horrible. They said it smelled exactly like something dead. Now again, I don't know why the paper would smell that way, we just found that very interesting.

Well when I got home from work and they told me all this they took me out on our deck to where the bucket of ashes was. I bent over it and saw a tiny piece of paper laying on top of the pile, very small but not yet disintegrated into ashes like most of the rest. I picked it up and the edges turned to ash in my fingers but I could make out what the words said. The back was unreadable, and the front was only big enough for one line, four words, and it said... "I don't want to." How ironic! I really didn't want to burn them! Well, my flesh didn't. And the devil didn't want his works to be burnt. Did you know that Satanists and members of the occult fear being burned to death the most?

My mother had saved one page for me to burn myself. She said she just ripped out and set aside the page she was at when she decided to. It ended up being the first page in the last book. All it said was, "Breaking Dawn". I thought that was so awesome because I really feel like I have broken my dawn. Its no longer night anymore.

Satan has created a beautiful picture, or story, to mask his evil, but it is all just a dangerous mask, a fatal lie. Please don't believe him. Get close to God and let Him begin to expose the tricks of Satan to you. I feel like this is exactly what happens to us a lot of times, we get deceived, tricked, lied to, and blinded by the devil, I know it happened to me. Like Jesus says in John 12:40 "He has blinded their eyes and hardened their hearts, he has made their minds dull, to keep them from seeing with their eyes and understanding with their hearts and minds and repenting and turning to Me to heal them."

God promises us that when we turn to Him, He will hear and answer us. Turn away from the things of this world, which won't last and will only lead you to death, and turn to Him who gives you life, and life eternal!
Romans 16:19b "...but I want you to be wise about what is good, and innocent about what is evil."

John 12:46 "I have come as a Light into the world, so that whoever believes in Me may not continue to live in darkness."

Matthew 21:22 "And whatever you ask for in prayer, having faith and [really] believing, you shall receive."

Luke 11:9 "So I say to you, ask and keep on asking and it shall be given you; seek and keep on seeking and you shall find; knock and keep on knocking and the door shall be opened to you."

  5. This is Halia's sister...I just read it. I knew Twighlight was bad and demonic but you explained with such revelation. It goes beyond just explaining why Twighlight is bad, you explain how much we need God. "Leave no such room or foothold for the devil, give no opportunity to him." I needed to be reminded of this! I am virtually obsessed with politics and worries and need to turn my attention to God instead of having this foothold in my life!

God bless you...keep spreading the truth and the revelations that God reveals to you..

  7. To the 'its a MOVIE people' person: Nothing is ever as simple as just saying 'it's a movie people'. As Christians, we are called to higher standards and those standards require us to be pleasing to God. Jesus Christ died and was resurrected from the Cross on the third day and because of that I am able to have eternity with Him. Think about it, death and the grave was so powerful that the God of the universe came down on earth and died so that we can have a chance in heaven with Him, cleansed by His blood. He clearly did not take evil lightly. And for any movie that makes evil look good makes a mockery of God and what He died for. If you didn't think it was such a big deal I don't think you'd be protesting right now. It got you somehow.

If evil isn't real, then what is fear?
If you think we're such idiots, why did you read the posts? And Idk about everyone else, but I'm not posting for MY benefit. I already know this stuff. I'm posting for the ones who don't know.
The chronicles of Narnia is an anolog of the Bible. Aslan represents Jesus.
What kind of a Christian would I be if I let you damn yourself?! That actually goes againt Christianity.

  12. to the "ITS JUST A MOVIE" people and all people that think that religion is the downfall of this earth...we Christians react this way because God opened our eyes when we became his. he opened our eyes to see what is wrong and what is right. so Christians see what is wrong while other people simply cant see the truth that is right in FRONT OF THEM!

  20. First of all: Anonymous said, "Well said Meag! Praise the LORD for young women of your generation who will stand against the tide & say what God says! Bless you! May everything you put your hands to prosper even as your soul prospers." May that blessing return to you a thousand fold.

To everyone who said to calm down and remember it's all "fake:" Do not dismiss the experiences of others because you did not have them. The story lines of the Twilight saga are fiction but that does not invalidate the experiences of Meag or her family. Fiction or non-fiction, fantasy or historical epic: genre and classification does not dictate demonic activity. If you've never smelled pages burning off sulfur or highly flammable materials resisting flame or realized demonic presence, at no point does that mean it doesn't happen.

Farther more, if one's personal experience of the evil of Twilight bugs you that much you might want to pray for direction from God; nothing bugs quite as much as conviction.

When I was in 6th grade I got into a sci-fi book series called Animorphs. My mother said after the fact that she had concerns but that they were getting me to read so she allowed it. I don't think that was the wrong choice because this is one of the moments I needed to go through to mature Spiritually.

The summer between 6th and 7th grade (I was 12) I got saved, but even then I continued reading the books without any negative feelings. They were science fiction, not fantasy; it was aliens and technology, not witches and witchcraft. I was able to justify it time after time, person after person who looked at the books and stepped back with a, "That's demonic."

Until I began to feel a conviction pretty much every time I went to God in prayer - not even about Animorphs but just for the sake of communion - and when I would enter worship. I, like meag, ignored it as long as I could. Until one night, I felt a demonic presence come from the bookshelf where all (20 or 30?) of the Animorph books were neatly stored after reading. It was as if a demon had stepped from the books, off of the shelf, and into my room and I said, "That's it. They're gone."

I went to my mother, told her what was going on and she supported me giving them up. I also had to take a deep breath and talk to my brother about it because he read them as well. I wasn't allowed to set things on fire - though my mother probably would have helped me had I asked - so I tore them all up and threw them away.

I've since come to the understanding that genre - while it can be used as a context clue into the spiritual origin of the novel or movie's contents (the overwhelming majority of fantasy I've come into contact with is trafically and blatantly demonic) - does not mandate the supernatural source of the text within.

The problem with Animorphs was not that they were sci-fi but that there was demonic activity within those pages.

The Chronicles of Naria are rooted in heaven and bear a strong witness that's withstood the test of time. Twilight is directly from demonic interaction and rooted in hell; it boasts wildly a lie that has deceived too many children of God.

When it comes to things we interact with: is God behind it or are there demonic forces vying for our attention through it? We, as mature followers of Christ, need to be able to tell the difference. And we should never, never shy away from calling evil 'evil' because it's unpopular or "unreasonable."

I have to wonder if there is a supernatural spirit of deception on these books. I have seen biblically based, spiritually educated, Christ-centered, can-quote-you-chapter-and-verse-on-the-spot, proved Christ over and over Christians put "Twilight" in their favorite books. Is this the result of a generation raised on and a society that has accepted Harry Potter? It's not hard to rationalize vampires when you've already rationalized witchcraft.
    ...

    ReplyDelete
  21. ...
Just because a demon advocates abstinence does not mean it's not a demon! If you know that it's a demon - clue: vampires always have been, always are, and always will be demons in a disquise of a fictional being - then you can rest assured that underneath the sheep's clothing lies in wait a creature of hell who wants nothing more than to pounce and wound you.

Compromising yourself by allowing demonic activity into your life of the basis that there are supposed pros such as a seemingly pro-abstinence message is just as bad as, if not worse than, blatant promiscuity. You know one is evil by looking at it; the other pretends to be an angel of light.

You don't give yourself AIDS to avoid Cancer.

  23. I believe in the paranormal and spirits and all that stuff not sure what that would make me but there is..

I also think that if you put it in your head that something is good or evil then that is what you are gonna believe. And what happens to you will reflect what you have in your head.

You could think one thing one day and then the next you look at the same thing and think something totally different.

I'm not saying that you are crazy or lying or anything like that .. But maybe what happened to you had nothing to do with the books themselvels it was just pure coincidence.

  24. Meag, you don't know me at all, but God bless you! No really, may you always be guided by the Bible. It's a tool God gave us. I think from time to time we all get off the straight and narrow path. I pray that you continue this path through your adulthood and that you raise Godly children to grow up and do the same. We are not Twilight fans, but we definitely battle something dark here at home. Time to go figure out what it is.

  25. Thank you all for your comments/discussions. I really appreciate your feedback and support! It is SO encouraging to see I am not the only one with these convictions!!!
To Ashley Renee: I could not have said it better myself. That is the whole point, it is the SPIRIT behind these works that matters. Books and movies such as Chronicles of Narnia and Lord of the Rings are different because of the SPIRIT behind them. I can't help but think it is most definitely demonic influence behind the Twilight series.
And another point I would like to add is this, it really does not matter our opinions, whether I am right or those who do not agree with me. It is about what GOD'S WORD says. I have asked over and over for those who do not share this view with me to show me where in scripture they can back their views up. I personally can't find anywhere in the Bible where it says some things just 'don't matter' or are 'just for entertainment'. I can't find where Jesus tells us that we don't have to be careful what we allow into our minds because some of it really just 'isn't that big of a deal'. No, Jesus Christ takes everything seriously and so should we. NOTHING is ever just a movie, or just a book, whether you are aware of it or not, it WILL affect you in some way!

You can't have your religion without also believing in the devil, so all you religious zealots can thank Stephenie Meyer for reaffirming your religious beliefs and let the rest of us be damned for allowing ourselves to be tricked by the mass media!! I can't think of anything else to say.....

    ReplyDelete
  35. Say it with me FICTION!!!! You know people can be way to religious and read into the bible way to much. It's stupid to think a book could invoke "voices" and "shadows". They're objects, and the last time i checked you have to have a soul to become evil.... So if watching "devil movies" or reading satanic books lets the devil in, then i guess i should rsvp my little piece of hell now... i think meag needs her head examined or put on meds

    ReplyDelete
  36. That was a really good read. Something that you didn't directly address was issues of sexual purity, even apart from the satanic nature of vampires etc.

I heard from a friend who went with a group of Christian youth and all the girls in the group went crazy over the guys when they took off their shirt and were talking about how hot they were.

Is that okay? It's not just Twilight either. It's media in general. I've found it surprisingly acceptable for Christian girls to lust after male celebrities.

Maybe a topic for another blog post? :)

    ReplyDelete
  37. It's a movie guys. Seriously, just a movie. Another post said it best... there are bigger things to worry about than teenage girls "lusting after male celebrities" and reading Twilight. It's funny how people have mentioned Lord of the Rings, The Chronicles of Narnia and Harry Potter, but noone has gone back and mentioned ANYTHING about any of the Disney movies, Alice in Wonderland, The Wizard of Oz, Stephen King etc etc etc If the worst thing I have to worry about my kids doing is watching Twilight or reading the books, then I'll consider myself lucky.

  38. Thanks alot for posting this Meag.
I stay away from movies like this but that's all I do. YOU really broke it down though girlie!:) and your testimony was powerful. Thanks again! I'm posting this for sure!

  39. To those who don't believe in hell or the Devil being real: He IS real. As real as you and I. I hope and pray that you will never have to find this out personally. My skin literally crawls just talking about him.

To those who think this is just a book or a movie: it all starts out innocent until it turns into something horrible. Example: think about an innocent date with a good-looking person that turns into a rape scene. Or think about human-trafficking.

To those who are amazing Christians and fight against this evil: May God bring many blessings into your life. May He give you the courage and stregth to stand against such things as these, with His powerful word and perfect love.

Meagan - thank you for posting this powerful message. It surely will (and has) change(ed) and touch(ed) many lives.

  42. Meag,
Good for you, for acting on your convictions. Regarding The Chronicles of Narnia and Lord of the Rings: These books also show beings with supernatural powers who are "good". C.S. Lewis had a strong interest in the occult before he became a Christian. I wonder why he didn't leave that interest behind. Yes, there is Christian imagery in the books, but it is mixed with occultism, unfortunately. How have,we just let this slide right by us?

Hey Meag, You have been a great blessing to many who have read your story. To those posters who say it's all nonsense, try this on for size: God doesn't believe in atheists! Now how silly do you think it is for you to say God doesn't exist, the devil doesn't exist, etc? When the first reports from Australia to England described a Platypus, the scientists there said that such a creature couldn't and therefore didn't exist. Guess what? Platypuses went on existing in spite of the naysayers. Just because you have no knowledge of something, doesn't give you the right to abuse those who do.

  44. Good job Meag!

People need to keep in mind that evil, for the most part, doesn't come over night. It starts with something as simple as reading a book on witchcraft that gets people interested in spells and other forms of witchcraft. I work at a bookstore and nothing outsold the bible for years until Twilight, that's a fact. In fact, since then, the rise of 'new age' books (paranormal activity, witchcraft, etc.) have been multiplying in years. It's scary to think that teenagers are practicing witchcraft so early on in their life. It takes ONE door to open for the devil and an entire fight with God's help to close it.

Someone said they were lucky their kids were just reading the books and not doing anything harmful. Some parents think they are lucky because their kid hasn't killed anyone even though they are in a gang, or that they get d's and not f's or that they smoke weed and not do meth. Why are we settling? Your kids are going down a path of darkness and it starts with just one book, or something similar in size.

  45. i want to know how many of these people who are praising Meag for posting her beliefs, out of those people i want to know how many of them truly believe that good can exist without evil? With all the problems out there like violence, suicide, drinking and driving, drug use and/or dependency.... and she's worried about a book... im not going to blast her religious beliefs, i just think that she should use her blogging time on real issues that actually affect teens and young adults today.

  47. Thank you again to all who are seeing the truth of this matter along with myself. It is so encouraging!

I would like to say a few things though:
    1. if you do not share my beliefs then i do not expect for you to understand and agree with this post. This was written for fellow christians who believe that there are spiritual battles going on everyday and who take their faith seriously.
    2. I would like to add that I have read the comments about how I should be worried about 'more important' matters. I think that instead of saying "we should be more concerned about sex, drugs, alcohol, etc" How about we take a bold step as christians and be concerned about it ALL! This blog was only written out of conviction and by being led of God to expose the lies I feel like we have come to believe.
    3. I do not want to get into a religious debate with anyone, if you do not agree with my views and you think i am stupid or taking this too far, why are you taking the time to respond? Why not just click this page closed and move on?

Once again I would like to say, someone please show me some scriptures that prove your point that this matter 'is no big deal'. That Jesus 'doesn't really care about this'. Also, if you read my previous reply you will see your questions about books such as Lord of the Rings and Chronicles of Narnia, answered. Thanks guys!

  48. I just wanted to say thankyou, Meag. I've been struggling with these books a lot lately. Harry Potter, Twilight. Before, I didn't think anything of them. I was one of those "it's just a book" people. But then my older sister showed me this blog she found. Everything had been layed out, so clearly. This had been the final push. I have finally decided to give up these books, burn them all, and it's all due to this blog. I thank you so much, for helping me see the truth. I just ask that you pray for me, and so many other people like me, who are srtuggling with this. God bless you, Meag, and thankyou.

  50. It is so refreshing for someone to have convictions instead of being worried about the uncomfortable opinions of others. Thank you for sharing this. I had some of the same experiences as you have had when I became interested in horror novels in college 20 years ago. I thought it was fine, but as a Christian I was held accountable for what I was allowing to enter my thoughts and heart. Thankfully God cares about us enough to provide opportunities out. May God's peace be with you and all of those who have read and commented on this article.

  52. Thanks so much! I was completely obsessed by the Twilight series and, after reading the first 3 was given a strong "no" by God to the fourth. Even though I stay away from all things Twilight, it's still a struggle. We don't fall into temptation because it looks bad--it's because it's deceptively delicious, like Twilight. Seriously, it's like a nicotine-laced Snickers with a hidden razor blade. And yeah...I totally loved and justified them too, and I'm not one who usually shouts down things, but this series really messed with me. If you haven't noticing it messing with you yet, it may be in subtler ways.

    just calm the f. down.

  54. Meag, Thank you so much for posting this. It is unbelievable to see how much ignorance there is from people who think this is just a movie or a book.
To those that think it's just a movie: IT'S A SEED!
Talking about bigger problems we have to focus on and not this?... THIS is exactly how it all starts. Someone gets pulled into Drugs (JUST TRY it) and the next thing you know, you're addicted.
Start lusting, by reading a book and let you imagination wonder, next thing you know, you're pregnant with a child you don't want...ABORTION.
These are not Problems, theses are the RESULTS of a PROBLEM that was never stopped.

This is a SEED in a form of a book, movie. Devil will use anything he can to get another soul to belong to him. When you think "This will never happen to me" that's when devil strikes to bring you down.
My family never had a TV in the house (and never will) and never have our parents allowed any form of reading material enter our house that's of non christian nature. STRICT you think,... yes it was. Now I'm 30, and looking back, I thank God for Godly Parents.
Ask yourself a question: When was the last time I drove by the speed limit? Law is law right, though almost all of us have pushed the limit. So, If parents don't set the rules and if we don't put boundaries on things, darkness will continue to spread until we with God's help say STOP, No More.
Meag, again thank you for posting this and to all of my brothers and sisters in Our Lord Jesus Christ, may God Bless you! Use the power of Prayer as Shield and the Word Of God and The Sword against evil. There a many people out there that are still in the darkness and need to be brought to light.

  55. You know, I can't help asking, what's with all the "Anonymous" postings? C'mon "Anons", put some feet to your convictions and state your names. Who are you hiding from, and why? Why must believers in Christ be ashamed to state their names for the record, even if only their first names? Convictions are good, but the inclination to remain anonymous I do not get. Are we afraid to let our true beliefs be known because someone we know may disagree and therefore disapprove of us?

If we are reluctant to take a stand on something of this nature, where the worst we can reap is criticism for our "extreme views" or "negativity", how in the world do we imagine we will stand for the truth in Christ when much more is at stake than mere social rejection or ridicule? True faith requires us to live out the courage of our convictions. If we are to be a testimony to Christ in difficult times, we must master the fear that attempts to hold us in check in easier times such as these.

Please, brothers and sisters in Christ, let's not shrink in the face of controversy or when faced with those who may disagree, however strongly, with our godly convictions. Our Lord endured the cross, even while experiencing (and despising) the shame of it. Can we not endure a little discomfort for His sake and for the sake of owning up to our convictions? I implore those who know the Lord and opt to comment anonymously: Dare to stand by your convictions and brave the disapproval of others - even the risk of "offending" some by reason of your convictions. Jesus Christ, our blameless Lord and Savior, the precious Son of God, hung naked on a cross for the sake of saving us who believe in His incredible sacrifice for us. Can we not have courage to stand unashamedly in the convictions He has given us?

It cost Jesus to take a stand for the truth and not back down, regardless of who it offended. And so it did for His true disciples. They spoke in the courage of the Holy Spirit. And if we are Christ's disciples we are called to take a stand for the truth, however unpopular, even to the risk of our own lives, if that's what it should come to.

Jesus tells us, "Whoever would save his life shall lose it; but whosoever would lose his life, for My sake, the same shall find it." We're not even talking loss of life here, but possible loss of approval and the appreciation of others, and already we're afraid and protecting ourselves with pseudonymns and titles of "Anonymous".

I think it's time we encouraged one another to step out of the shadows and into the light of the convictions that the Lord has given us, and live unashamed and unafraid of the backlash that may come to us because of our faith and our convictions, willing to be misunderstood, even rejected, as Jesus was, if it should come to that.

"For the servant is not greater than his Master." (If Christ suffered rejection by men, shouldn't we be prepared to suffer rejection too?)

"Let us go forth, therefore, unto Him who is outside the camp, bearing His reproach." (Suffering reproach for reason of our loyalty to Him.)

  56. "Why not just click this page closed and move on?"

Why not: because you book burners are seldom content to burn your own books. You want to burn mine as well. That's the problem with you Fundies: you have yet to learn how to live and let live. I don't believe in your god, I'm not interested, I don't care. That doesn't stop the god-bothering I encounter all the time.

"Something very interesting happened though as they burned the books. The fire blazed, and burned the pages, but the smoke smoldered a very strange color, it burned a bright yellow/dull green. Now, this may not have been anything at all, but that is quite unusual. Usually the only thing that burns this color is sulfur, which is not found in paper!"

Meag, ignorant is no way to go through life. In the first place, most paper does contain sulphur. That's what makes it yellow and deteriorate: traces of sulphuric acid. Secondly, sulphur burns with a barely visible blue light, not yellow and certainly not green. Most treated papers burn with a greenish light. Try it yourself and see.

You read a scary book and had a bad dream. That's it!

I haven't read Twilight (couldn't get through it) though I've read all the Harry Potter books. Know what happened? NOTHING! I was not "tempted" into witchcraft because I know that witchcraft is total nonsense. It has never worked, it will not work, it can not work. It's nonsense. That there are still people out there who believe otherwise is a testimony as to the failure that is public "education" in this country.

  57. I found this blog entry through another Christian website (kjos). I have not read the books, but I have seen the movie because my 16 year old daughter begged me too. She thought it was the best movie ever and that I HAD to watch it.
I have a degree in English Literature and my initial impression (of the movie anyway) was that it was a thinly veiled metaphor for losing one's virginity (hence the popularity with teenage girls). The theme of temptation was strong throughout. Giving in to that temptation despite all reason and logic was shown to be romantic, glamorous, mysterious, and just "the right thing to do"--in other words portraying evil as good (in a rather obvious way I might add). The symbol of an outstreched hand offering an apple says it all!
By the way...Faith in God, and the discernment that comes with it, is not "ignorant", nor is it the equivalent of book burning :) It is, rather, the beginning of wisdom.

I always love it when people try and deny the existence of the devil of God...Using theories as pathetic as the big bang theory to explain how the universe came into existence (if there was nothing before the universe 'including energy' then how could there have been a big bang? And if this poor theory holds then you only need to see how perfectly and uniquely the human body is made and formed to be convinced that only something beyond this world could have created it with care! The Bible also made predictions - and every single one of them has come true? That can't be chance. I also love it how Christianity is always under attack - I believe something convicts a non-Christian to do this. Bottom line is the books are not good news.

  72. Meag, This was extraordinarily done. You did an excellent job backing everything up with truth from The Word. I have dealt with some similar struggles lately, ANYTHING that portrays witchcraft or demonic activity is forbidden, that does include Disney, classics, supposed "Christian" material - if it's tainted with sorcery it should be out. There is no such thing as "good" witchcraft. For me the struggle is mostly about the loss of monetary value. I'm so glad you included the scriptures on not even being able to recover the gold or silver or other "value" from such things. If it's been used in a pagan way, it is utterly detestable to YHVH.

  73. Meag, Take comfort that the 'fools' who have commented negatively toward your blog don't really hate you, they hate GOD. They fear deep down He IS real! That's why they get so worked-up. BUT... one day "every knee shall bow and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord"! "GOD-HATERS": suppose you are right and God doesn't exist. What have Christians lost in believing in something that wasn't true? NOTHING! Now, suppose Christians are right and there is a God. What have "God-haters" lost? EVERYTHING!! Think about it. Don't be a fool to think our wonderfully crafted bodies just "happened" to jump together. Oh yea, millions of years! Whatever! Have you ever seen a 1000 piece puzzle put itself together? Why not dump one out on your kitchen table and watch it for the next 50 years. See what happens-surely one or two pieces will fall into place. I mean, it's only cardboard and not a living, breathing, moving machine like a human body! Wake up "God-haters"!

    ReplyDelete
  74. Wow, that's a great point! Millions of years of evolution against a 1000 piece puzzle on your kitchen table over 50 years. What a stupid argument. Also quoting scripture? You might as well read of a Chinese takeaway menu for all the moral force that argument has. Why don't you think for yourself?

Haha, talking of hysteria, why are you so convinced that people who don't believe in god are haters? You're supporting someone who is delusional to the point that they'll burn a book and you dare to call rational thinkers haters? You have the audacity to call logical thinkers fearful when you have nothing except the biased abridged words from your stupid scripture. Are you really too afraid to question your own beliefs?

    ReplyDelete
  75. Pizza Devil: YOU are the one who can't think for yourself. You trust some scientist that claims he knows what happened 2.5 billion years ago. Wow, do you think you have to have a little faith to believe in that? No, you have to have more faith to believe in that than God who spelled out each day of creation in His Word. My point about the puzzle is that not one piece will jump into place by itself. Give it 100 years, 1 million years, you pick the number. It will just deteriorate. Throw in a tornado or fire and see what happens. So evolutionists say that randomly just the right 2 chemicals happened to join together. (in a swirling ocean) So, then they joined and became a living substance and then collected other chemicals to become more specialized and finally became a living creature. Funny how we don't see any of that still happening today. Also, where do you think these substances came from in the first place? Where do you think the massive substance came from that was compressed so tightly and exploded into planets (Big Bang Theory) Then these materials broke off into perfectly round planets with moons orbiting around them and then they all began revolving around the sun. Who is thinking for themselves here? I say you are haters because you are. You hate God. Your "god" is this world and everything in it. Your "god" is yourself because you can't see past yourself. YOU are so closed-minded, you can't "see" past your evolutionary faith that makes no sense. If you have studied science at all, you would know that things are always moving toward a more caotic state, not a more organized state. Evolution says the opposite. Do you have a high school diploma? Surely not a college degree or you would know that. Have you read a biography on Darwin? He actually admitted that there must have been a creator in the beginning. Have you read the Bible? How can you say you are unbiased if you haven't read both sides. I have. I don't necessarily agree with burning books and such, I don't even know this girl who started this blog, but she did what she needed to do for herself. I do know that God is real. He created this world to be perfect, but we as people disobeyed God's rules-we sinned. God cannot tolorate sin and His punishment for sin is death. He gave us a second chance by coming to earth as a man, Jesus Christ. Jesus did not sin, but took the punishment for all of our sins by being killed on a cross. He died, but rose again the 3rd day. If one believes this, his sins will be forgiven and will see life after death in heaven. If one doesn't, he will see death after death in hell. It's that simple. Don't believe it? You will one day. I was feeling a very strong spiritual attack today and yesterday and it was really oppressive and strong and my mom said for me to repent and ask God how I may have gotten off track and very silently I heard the Holy Spirit say...the Twilight books. I could not believe it and I sat there in complete shock because it did not really cross my mind how this could be offensive to God but if definitely made sense now. I got those books out of my house immediately and I will not be so foolish to let something evil in a pretty package snake its way into my life (and my home) again.

PS-I felt better instantly once the Holy Spirit revealed what was grieving the Lord and I removed that strong hold invitation from Satan into my life.

  78. I just want to say thank you! Though I was never part of the "obsessed" Twilight crowd I did read the books and have friends that where (and still are) hardcore Twilighters :(

But anyway that wasn't my point. The Lord did tell me as well that I needed to completely cut myself off from Twilight. Thank God that they where not very deeply rooted so it was fairly easy to take the final plunge.

But that order from God was part of an ongoing spiritual "deep-cleaning" that the Lord has been leading both me and my mom through over the last few months. I just had to say how wonderful it is to hear from someone else (especially someone my age) who has heard and obeyed God's call not to "be wise in your own eyes; fear the LORD and shun evil." (Proverbs 3:7)

So ya that's all just had to stop and say hi and that was one awesome testimony :D

  79. wow, thank you for writing this. Tis has definitely opened my eyes and i am definitely getting rid of those books.

  80. Thank you for such a wonderfully written blog about the dangers of these books and movies.

Back in the 90's I was just as obsessed about the Ann Rice books (Interview with a Vampire, etc.) as people are today about the Twilight books and movies. You cannot believe how backslidden I became once I started reading the books and watching IWTV over and over again while lusting after the main character in my thoughts. It was just so wrong and I finally listened to the Holy Spirit and stopped reading the books, etc.

I can't believe how easily I was deceived by "innocent" vampire books and movies.

    Thanks again for writing this.

  83. WOW. meag, you are my hero! don't listen to these negative people. you did NOTHING wrong! people may think you are crazy, and need help...but i think that they are the one's that REALLY REALLY need help! i can only imagine of how proud God is right now. BECAUSE he IS and ALWAYS will be REAL!! one day, all of the people that were saying negative comments towards you will realize that they made a REDICULOUS decision by saying stupid things like "God isn't real". because YOU and the people that agree with you will be the ones standing with Jesus in heaven! ...lets not talk about where the other people will be spending eternity...:/ all i can say, is that i WILL be praying for all those crazies that think that there is no WONDERFUL God. because he created them, and i personally think they are being VERY selfish for not believing.

OH! and that pizza guy...was that completely necassary?? that was probably the most rude comment i have ever seen. YOU my dear, need some SERIOUS help and some SERIOUS churchhhhh! but hey, i will pray for ya :)

you're amazing meag :) i think i'm gonna go burn my books!!

  87. Wow, manifesting life fears into reality via a clump of paper?

The human mind can produce smells, sights, feelings etc, expecially when one is completely deluded, fearful etc.

Irrationally trying to explain normal rational feelings, desires etc away via blaming another medium......Oh noes the devil!
(btw study where your religion comes from, the roots and origins it was stolen and plagurised from, you have your entities ass about tit)

Just because you think you are sane and have a book to lean (Written by the hand of man) on to prop up your delusions doesnt make it so.
I see alot of people driven by fear and pathetically so, it is fear driven by NATURAL desires and feelings. Ones you may think you are too pious to tolerate but my silly friends, most of this is really just normal.

The devil isn't rolling around inside you, God isn't fighting for your soul.

That is just the natural push and pull of the "easy way" v's "the moral way"....take what you want v's earn it. You can think it is good V evil if that is your predication tho ultimately it's really just whether your compassion levels are enough to consider the people and world around you.

In my world, compassion is god.
An elusive entity borne of men tho rarely called upon.

  88. To all the anon's and unbelievers: yes, religion is bad, it's also a tool of the devil to cause war, death, and destruction. Religion is the work of evil men...men's laws, men's buildings, and satan has infected all religions for his purposes. To have faith one must have a relationship.... and all that is required is repentence, and believing in the one and only true God, his name Jesus Christ. So this isn't about religion...I hate religion, it's about a relationship with Jesus Christ, without him the scales on your eyes will remain. These movies....vampire,harry potter, narnia, lord of the rings,(Tolken and C.S.Lewis were not christians) and many others, are all invoking imagery that is seducing and captures the souls of many. Magic in any form, even disguised as good, is contrary to God. It is deception, lies and idolatry. Christians are instructed to:
Abhor that which is evil; cleave to that which is good. RO.12:9
The only book a christian should be addicted to....is the word of God. It can save your soul, and remove the scales..and then you will see the truth. The world is evil, and under strong delusion..... but nothing is impossible with God! Amen

  90. Greetings from South Africa at 4:00 in the morning your blog has kept me up for a while.

Wow Meag you really are blessed with wisdom and real guts to take something out of your life that you really loved.

Iv never been a fan of twilight but there are other things in my life that open doors to evil, this has shown me I need to start dealing with these things if I ever truly want to be serious about my relationship with God. I also hope that a few of my (twilight obsessed :P )friends will see this.

To the people that say these things are just books and movies well I compair these movies to Aids. Aids infects the person but does not cause the eventual death of the person, it just breaks down the bodys' immune system and then a different virus comes in and kills the person because there is nothing to protect it. In the same way we get affected by these movies they get past our usual defences and break us down from the inside. Don't believe me? Go do some research on serial rapists/killers. Most of them start with porn and then they need bigger kicks so then they start weirder stuff and then it eventually leads to rape. I'm not saying every person that loves twilight is going to be affected by it that they go join a cult or something but you do get some individuals who will because they are more serceptible to that kind of attack. Main point is that it makes us happier to accept the next movie about vampires that might go more into the occult side of it, it opens us up.

Thanks again meag your blog really shows things in new light. Hope that it touches many more lives.

    Night night :)
    Christo

  91. Hi there
im a 16 year old girl in a christian school. whta you have said makes a lot of sense and i respect your view on twilight. but for, i read all the books and i enjoyed them a lot. i dont think its changed me in any way or had any negative effects on me. the thing is not every is like you. and not everyone will have the same negative effects as you.

    ReplyDelete
  92. Wow.

Everyone is getting really worked up over this. Can we not have a reasonable discussion without bashing the other person and calling names? Its just immature. And as far as religion goes, can I just say that you're not going to get very far with the other person by just saying "you're wrong" and then calling them an idiot, whatever you're trying to convince them of. Just sayin'. (And that goes for Christians as well as atheists, agnostics, whatever.)

Meag, you're the first person I've heard of who got spiritually affected by this. Yet another reason for me to dislike the series, besides the fact that its not well-written and has lots of crappy relationship stuff in it.

Anyway, I have to say that just because you ended up being demonically oppressed, doesn't mean that everyone will be....different people have different levels of spiritual discernment and sensitivity. I tend to not be spiritually affected by stuff, so I wasn't, but I could see how some people would be.

  94. Thank you for posting this! I had resisted the movies up until about a month ago when I finally watched the first one. I was immediately hooked and began watching it every night, sometimes twice in one night. For a week this went on and I realized that something was 'off' in my Bible readings. Not only that but every time I talked to my kids about the Lord there was always an uneasy feeling in the pit of my stomach. I stopped watching it but still listened to the music. It was only about a week before the new movie was available to buy so I got that too and the cycle started all over again. Again the uneasiness, I couldn't stop thinking about it, all joy had left my Bible reading. I felt like God had stopped speaking to my heart, all insight was gone, except for the insight that I felt like I was being a hypocrite. I would try to talk to my kids about not becoming obsessed with something, or constantly thinking about something, and all the while it was exactly what I was doing. I talked to a friend of mine about it and she told me that I should buy the books. I knew there was no way that I could do that, it was bad enough that I couldn't go a day without the movies! I had bought the movies on Amazon and that was the only way I could watch them so one night I discussed my problem with my husband and he asked if it would help if he forbade me to go on there. lol-that may sound weird but I am a firm believer in obeying my husband, it was part of my promise to him when we got married :) Anyway, I said yes and the next morning I felt a little better but there was still something missing. In that month I had not submitted myself to the Lord, I basically argued saying there was nothing wrong with what I was doing. I suddenly felt like my heart was melting, I got down on my knees and begged forgiveness. I apologized for being so stiff-necked and head strong. I can tell you there was a definite difference that day, I finally felt free! Ah it was good feeling :D
The past few days I've been struggling again and I believe it's because I was listening to the music, the devil is so sneaky :P But your post reminded me not to give him a foothold.
For those out there that think there is nothing wrong with the Twilight Series, you can believe what you want, but don't make us feel bad for choosing to stay away from it. Part of being human means making choices, right or wrong we have that ability and whether you agree with it or not, at least respect this choice. As someone else said, 'The Twilight Series isn't hurting anyone', well, neither is my choice not to have anything to do with it.

    ReplyDelete
  95. It's fiction, folks!! Both the books AND the movies!! If you're getting so hooked on both, sorry, but there's something wrong here, and I can see why our country is in the horrible trouble it's in!!

  96. Thank you for posting this. I never got into the series like a lot of people have but I have other books that I need to get rid of for the same reasons. I am so glad you went into detail and quoted scripture on how to go about doing it properly! Praise God!

  97. Thank you so much for posting this. It has convicted me to listen to God no matter what others say or think.

The way I see it your message is not only about giving up something that can open your mind up to Satan and evil, but is also about listening to God even if something seems irrational or is not something you want to do. It takes great strength and courage to do that. Keep the faith. God bless!

  98. I personally found the books repellent: poorly written, nonsensical, pointless. I stopped reading after a couple of pages because I realized that it would be a complete waste of my time. However, even if every copy were tracked down and burnt, there would not be one shred of evil less in the world. The "terrifying spirit guide" is good for publicity, but that's all it ever was. If you're serious about combating evil, do as Jesus did: take care of the poor, treat every man as your brother, etc. It's far, far harder than burning some books, because the high road is also a lonely road. If you don't like the books, get rid of them. They're meant to creep you out and disturb your sleep. But ascribing some demonic power to them is basically failing to take responsibility for your own impulses and actions.

  99. The way I see it, It is a book and movie.A fiction book and a fiction movie. Now the way the rest of the world see it, Is their business. Sounds like to me alot of hype over nothing. Why because it is not real. Point...

  103. I think your personal revelation, and you sharing it was Awesome! I believe some could read a series like Twilight, and not get to entangled. However, most jump right in, and it soon consumes their life. I don't know that everyone needs to burn their books, but most probably do. During my reading of the Twilight series I found in two weeks I was miserable, and wanted a new life. I was ready to end my marriage of 11 years, and let my three small kids work through a divorce. Praise Jesus that I had a close, personal friend who prayed with me and stuck by me, and most importantly making me accountable! I laugh now as I look back, but during that time those books probably should have been burned! It's the heart of the matter, and if you see yourself dedicating more of your time to something than your creator, well that's just not good! Thanks again for your story!

  104. Wow, this post sure has stirred up some spiritual warfare. I read it months ago, but just read all the comments today. I read it is as one person's view of what reading these books has done in her life. I read it as someone trying to help others that may be in the same situation as her get the help they needed in their lives. Just because she wrote a blog about these books does not mean she does not care about other important issues in this world, she was just giving her testimony about one experience in her life. I didn't read it as someone being judgmental about others and what they should or should not do, but someone sharing her experience to reach out to people who have the same beliefs as her and trying to prevent them from having the same experiences.

I find it interesting that those of you that do not have the same beliefs as her are attacking her and being judgmental towards her, when you are calling the Christians judgmental. Why take the time to read it at all? It's not a short read. Perhaps you are feeling some conviction about things in your life . . . especially those of you that keep coming back.

I also find it interesting that some of you that are attacking her are doing it with such conviction and profanity. Is that really necessary? After all, a blog is a discussion, not a fight.

Meag, I commend you for being so young and standing by your convictions. I encourage you to view the negative comments as exactly what they are, spiritual warfare. Ephesians 6:12 "For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms."

It is true that not everyone that reads these books will experience what you have experienced, not everybody has a calling on their life like you obviously do. And for those of you that say it is just a movie or a book, the devil already has you fooled so he doesn't need to affect you through books or movies. But, for those of us that try every day to lead a spiritual life and get closer and closer to God, you are the ones that the devil wants to affect. You are his enemies.

Whether you are a Christian or not, the basic concept is that anything you can be addicted to that takes you away from the things that you should be concentrating on in your life needs to be dealt with. Before I became a Christian, I was addicted to a soap opera. I taped it every day and watched it as soon as I got home from work. One day I got home, started watching it, and yelled at my 2-year old for bothering me during my show. I had been away from her all day, she wanted and deserved my attention, and I was yelling at her for no reason. I stopped taping that soap opera that day and have not watched it since. It was something that I needed to deal with in my life and I did. This could be something somebody needs to deal with in their life and you are helping them through this blog.

If these books and movies have not affected your life, this blog was not talking to you . . . or was it . . .

    ReplyDelete
  105. WOW Meagan, just read all theses comments. Stir it up girl, speak the truth. The one's that have read your blog now know the truth and they will be judged on what they know and don't do as we all will. Great job.

  106. Meag-

First, let me say, thank you Jesus! There are still young people out there today that have the moral fiber, the willingness to stand up and not only state what they believe, but have the backbone to do so, very publically. I applaud, you my dear.

I do not personally feel the same conviction over this series, as you do, but I can say this - You made some great points, and it's always nice to see someone be able to make a point - and back it up with the Word. God convicts each of us differently, and I am happy to see that you've come to realize your conviction, and to do something about it. God utilized you in your conviction to reach others that, may not have otherwise dwelt upon the thoughts you've presented.

Secondly, I would like to say that I am very impressed that you have not responded to all of the negative comments that have been posted. :) It is so easy to be sucked into an argument, and to respond in a way that is un-Christ-like. And you've not done that! So, again, kudos, friend!

We can know this - In this society, the reason there are so many bad decisions being made, so many young people diving off into the World, and eventually the pit of Hell, is that the moral fiber has been taken out. If we have no moral points in which we base cultural decisions on, then what do we have? If nothing is EVER outlined as "right" or "wrong" then, how will we ever know where we stand? I heard once this:
A GPS cannot work properly without the standard positioning "points" that allow it to calculate position. Those points tell you where you have been, where you are, and how to get to where you are going. This is the same for morality in this country. Without having some form of moral "points" in which we utilize, we won't know where we've been, where we are, or how to get anywhere.... It's one of the best analogies I've ever heard.

As for the negative comments, and those that want to say we "religious" people are the problem... You have to remember that Christians are going to be persecuted. They have been throughout history, are today, and it will only get worse for us in the future. Remember what Jesus said - “If the world hates you, know that it has hated me before it hated you. If you were of the world, the world would love you as its own; but because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you. Remember the word that I said to you: ‘A servant is not greater than his master.’ If they persecuted me, they will also persecute you. If they kept my word, they will also keep yours."—John 15:18-20

Thank you Lord for persecution, because it means we are DOING something!!

Ok. So, all this was to say, I am proud of you. I may not know you, but you've blessed me today... as you've allowed God to use you to bless others with this blog. Good for you. Don't ever stop standing up for what you believe, girl! Jesus is smiling because of you!

For those that aren't believers, and don't understand why we think/act/speak the way that we do... You will know why when you make the decision to see that Christ is the only way. If Christ came into your life and changed it as radically as it's been done for me, and my fellow brothers and sisters, you would understand the reason we feel so strongly about issues such as this. Remember that Christians cannot be lumped together, as I would not lump your negative attitude toward our faith on the whole of society.

Take care and God Bless!!! :)

  107. Everyone has seen all sorts of "faith healers" who can "heal" the sick. And we all know that this sort of "healing" is quackery. If it were true, then we would not need doctors, hospitals or prescription medicines.

Turning water into wine... Doesn't that sound like something that a B-grade David-Copperfield-wannabe magician would do in a nightclub act? There are a dozen ways that you could stage things to make it look like water is turning into wine. There is no reason why a normal person would accept a magic trick as proof that someone is God.

Neither of these miracles can be scientifically tested today. Not one of Jesus' miracles left any tangible evidence for scientists to study.
It is as simple as that. If someone claimed to be God today, you would never believe it if the evidence consisted of faith healing and magic tricks. Never. Yet billions of people claim that Jesus' faith healing and magic tricks prove that he is God.
Let's imagine that Jesus truly is God. What might he have done to prove it? He could have started by taking one of his most famous quotes from the Bible and acting on it. In Matthew 17:20 Jesus says quite clearly:

For truly, I say to you, if you have faith as a grain of mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, 'Move from here to there,' and it will move; and nothing will be impossible to you.
To prove that he is God, Jesus would have moved a mountain. Especially since it is so easy. And Jesus would have written something down to explain himself.

you are unreal.. really twilight is a sign of the devils workings... so what your saying is, there are over 36 diff religions, and they are all wrong and your right. If you cant handle criticizem then dont post your "negative" thoughts online for the billions of us to see. Twilight is a well written book form a women who had a dream and is now making a great livivng doing it.. grow up dont preech online and dont bash people for belieivng somthing different then what you belieive..

    Thanks :)

  113. Meag, thank you for being so honest about what you experienced with the Twilight series. I also had bad experiences with vampire stuff. After I was saved at 13 y.o. I thought nothing of watching Buffy the Vampire Slayer. However within a few months the Holy Ghost let me know I shouldn't watch it anymore. Another clue was that I was having dreams about vampires! Unfortunately, my conviction about this didn't last forever. Some years later when I was "mature" and "could handle it" I decided to watch Lost Boys on TV. That night I had the most terrifying and vivid nightmare (?) in which I opened my eyes in my darkened bedroom and found myself lying flat but levating a few inches above my bed. This happened twice that night.I prayed for God to protect me as I slept and it never happened again.
One more thing. Not everyone will have a bizarre experience from watching Twilight or other vampires movies, but getting wrapped up in something that is about the occult will decrease your desire for a relationship with Jesus. Being entertained is just not worth it.

I see where you are coming from and I am a Christian myself, but going into reading this and Harry Potter and any other book along those lines, I went into it knowing that it was a-a book of fiction, b-most of the behaviors are not christian-like, c-i won't let it interfere with my actions and lifestyle... if it seems it is, then stop! but, ive read these books and haven't had problems. I do censor what I watch and read... especially certain violent horror films. I dont think that reading these books necessarily says "Hey, Satan, let's bond." its entertainment, and as long as we know where we stand, we can read and watch works of fiction. Just cuz these fictional characters have "powers" doesn't make it any worse. What about Superman, Spiderman, etc who have supernatural powers and abilities... does that make them inappropriate?

  122. Hey Meag!

    Carla Cilliers speaking =)

Firstly, I'm making use of the content on your blog =) praise ABBA for deliverance!
(I REALLY want to keep this short, cause I tend to chat, type lengthy messages, haha!)
I want to encourage you in persuying ABBA FATHER as "violently desperate" as you have done thus far, despite falling..YOU GOT UP, by His great mercies =)

It's not about what people say, it's about what HE says and the fruit in our lives testifies of repentance and our walk with and desire for HIM (Mathew7). You can't argue against fruit in someone's life!

I've once heard the quote "other's can, but I can't!"..and this is true to those who follow HIM and desire HIM and His presence in their lives, RELENTLESSLY =) Do we want the good things or the EXCELLENT things!! =D

It saddens me more than what it makes me angry when I read some of the people's comments. Cause they are DEAD. spiritually. And they WON'T see unless HE opens their eyes and hearts....no matter how good our reasoning or arguments. It's a HARD thing indeed....
(I'd like to start ending off with..) The Word tells us that the gate is NARROW, but not only is the gate NARROW, the Way thereafter is EXTREMELY NARROW and it just gets MORE NARROW the closer we get to HIM. Only those that truly love HIM (by HE who empowers us to do so) will walk this NARROW Way to the end..to receive our inheritance HIM(!) in ALL HIS splendour and glory =)

and "no, non-believers,we don't give ourselves over to some 'monkish lifestyle, depriving ourselves from the 'joys of this world' to reap our rewards later, we JOYFULLY lay it aside, cause we have tasted and we know only HE can sattisfy." =)

  124. I think the voices you heard, as well as the other events, were a combination of guilt combined with religious hysteria, and given your upbringing (I'm guessing some kind of charismatic church?) that's not unusual. Personally I think Twilight is badly-written schlock and I really don't think it could cause the issues you had. Just my two cents.

  127. Kyler Cook-

HAHAHAHAHA. Go sister. That's what I am talking about. If we had not conviction then where would we exist? The agnostics and atheists mock your convictions, and yet I agree with Paul and say let them increase! Let your convictions consume you and all of us other believers until we are at the same point jesus was, not believing equality with God something to be grasped and daily giving ourselves over to his call. Carrying the cross can sometimes be as simple as getting rid of the idol you have placed in your life. The sad thing is that every christian will deal wit, at some point, an idol in there life that they lift up. Many misread the first commandment and think that you can have things you are obsessed with as long as it is not above God on a love chart. The actual commandment is "Thou shalt have no other gods before me". This means no god's in his sight. No gods before him. And we all know how magnificent God's vision is.

I have many similar stories as you and Im only 20 years old. I have had similar experiences as you with things such as Pokemon cards and Yugioh. The same burning experience happened with one of my friend's Yugioh cards, where the pure paper item resisted burning for up to 10 minutes and then smelt like sulfur afterwards. He kept tons of them under his mattress and at night he would feel like there was something in his room. He wasn't even fully a christian at the time. It proves that there are things in our daily lives waiting for us to get addicted and sidetracked. Jesus was right when he said the road to eternal life is narrow. I think that what you have been compelled into writing was for our kingdom's sake and rather than commending you I can give you the commendment of the spirit inside of me which is the Holy spirit. God is truly proud of your obedience, and look at the result it's having! Christians eyes are being opened to the abhorent, sneaky sin that lives among us all over the world by reading your story.

P.S. I have just finished a Fantasy Fiction novel for young christians to read because of the filth that exists out there that are not spiritually building. Harry Potter and Twilight do fall into those categories. It has nothing to do with the ficiton nature of the books that makes it unnacceptable to Jesus, but rather the end that they lead us to as people. Ask all of the screaming girls who follow Robert Pattinson currently what their dreams are. You wont find a young girl who is ready to support her husband, or building towards it. You will find a confused girl who thinks that men should be as interesting as their imagined Edward Cullen. It's sad, and I refer to it as Girl-Porn because it's exactly that. You keep speaking out and giving your testimony with boldness. Attempt to change this world with your convictions and you will find yourself in a place of power because of your willingness to be obediant to our father in heaven. God is so good that he delivers us daily from satan because of his love for us.
    Your thankful brother, Kyler

  129. Hey,

Its not so much that you had a physical experience of this evil, its really plain and simple. It does NOT glorify God. Point is we call ourselves Christian but we have no understanding of the word. Our desire to fit it, find some solace, entertain ourselves has left us open to things we can't even imagine. In little bits we find that we become more receptive to things we might have considered perversion.

The ones who have it bad are the little kids. Cartoon Network and Disney Channel are not as pure as we think. So many subliminal messages that we as adults do not even consider. All of these make me scared for my children. Perversion is everywhere you look. Today young adults are caught in the devil's cross-hairs. Imagine the number of vampire movies and serials on TV today.

The whole entertainment system is pervaded with hidden messages designed to deaden the mind. If the devil is on such rampage, does it not make us see that the end really is near?

Thanks Meag for your post. Hopefully some will come to understand the truth behind it all. The experience of the writer herself does not leave a lot to the imagination; dreams and presences ad who knows what else. What more can anyone say? Read the fine print of the Word. If the Bible says its OK, then ignore all the "bible bashing Christians".

  130. Thank you so much for sharing your experience and how God came through for you. I have had some similar experiences myself and have seen it in others. For people who scoff at it, it is only because they are deceived and don't realize that there are only 2 "real powers" out there. This is exactly what Satan wants to persuade people of without them realizing it -- "It's no big deal --- what's your problem? why are you making such a major deal out of something that's just a book..." But when I read this, I shudder, for the exact reasons you just described so well, and so Biblically. That power is very real, and it is very subtle and insidious. Praise God literally that He gave you eyes to see and ears to hear --- And again, thank you so much for taking the time to share what God has done for you. There are a lot of people out there, that I believe God will use your testimony to convict them of the evil that they may already be fooled by. Also, it's interesting how Satan works in some people I would view as tools. I've seen a lot of interviews with J.K. Rowling, and she described a number of things, (that she obviously viewed as harmless), that she participated in as a child that were starkly demonic, and that the idea of Harry Potter -- all of the books from the beginning to the last novel, came to her all in one idea why she was sitting on the train one day. Hmmm. Every time I see a media blitz --- I think, where is Satan in all this? "And how do you benefit if you gain the whole world --- but lose or forfeit your own soul in the process?" Luke 9:25

  131. Hi. I was so glad to find your blog as I am aware of the rising influence of the occult and have concern to warn people as God gives me opportunity. I will be using info from your blog to talk to parents at a Christian school soon.

  132. Kyler--as most of the girls who read stuff like Twilight are in fact tweens (though I like to think that even as a tween in the 80s I had better taste than they do now)--I would hope they wouldn't be ready to support a husband. They're far to young to even think of marriage.

    ReplyDelete
  133. Ok, I am really wavering on all this. Not the part about the occult or whether Satan is real. I am a born again Christian and I am actually reading through the Bible right now-just finished up all the O.T. laws-I believe that the occult is real and we have to be careful.

I am struggling b/c I am a mom of 2 young boys and am married. My struggle is that I LOVED the books and the movies.

I am wondering about the romance part and the fact that this really won't leave me alone.

I have no intention of divorcing my husband but well before I read the books or watched the movies we have had some marital troubles. Things that will need to be worked on regularly.

Anyway, I literally can't stop thinking about the movies/books. I know that kind of love is fake. I mean we are all human and no guy is that gentlemanly (sp?) all the time etc. Plus we live in the real world where cares and troubles work against us.

Is this still Satan using this to harm me? When I mean I can't stop thinking about it I mean that pretty much literally.

I have been "stern" with myself and my thoughts but still struggle. I wish for my husband to be different (and did before books/movies) and this series only reinforced that fact.

Is it really Satan using these books? I have watched other romantic type movies (like the Notebook) but never been so enthralled with something until now.

Any thoughts? Any help for me? I don't own the books or movies. I rented the movies and books so it's not like they are readily available. I am not having bad dreams. Just struggling with my thoughts... I hope this makes some sense and someone can help me. I sure need something...
    Thanks!

  134. Hey Meag I am so glad that you made this blog, because if my mom hadn't found it and read it to me I would be in a HUGE spiritual battle right now. I used to be a HUGE Twilight fan; I had a board game, a Edward poster and I had read the first two books. Although nothing creepy happened to me, (Thank God) I was completely obsessed with Twilight and found that even in church I couldn't concentrate on God or the sermon. After my mom read the blog to me we both decided to get rid of all our Twilight stuff once and for all. We broke the DVDs and the soundtrack discs and threw them away. As for the board game, the poster and the DVD covers, we both burned them. After we burned them as much as we could we put the ashs in a trash bag. And as we were doing this I found a few cards that were for the board game that hadn't quite burned up, and if I remeber correctly one of the cards said: "It'll be like I never existed." and another said: " Lets see if she is immune to all our powers." Kinda creepy is't it.

  135. In response to Tirzah the Author, that's exactly like what happened to me with the line from the page when i burnt my books. Very interesting how things like that do happen. I don't believe anything is ever a coincidence, I think we overlook too much nowadays and don't acknowledge the true matter of situations. It still to this day encourages me SO much to read these comments and continue to get feedback from sharing how i feel. I know not everyone agrees (obviously haha) but that's ok, I did not write this for any other reason than to state how i feel and what i believe. Please feel free to still contact me via facebook or email if anyone would like to talk, as i get emails on this subject still quite often.

  137. Dear meag,
I'm sorry for the rude comments you have received it makes them look worse than the way they feel roasted your blog. I have been raised Pentecostal all my life I am 6th generation. I have preached to, preached at, and preached on. I have heard encouraging stuff and just plain hog wash. I admit I am not as strong in that specific religion as I use to be not bc I disagree with it but bc of all the stuff people want to make others believe and make them feel unworthy. That in my opinion is not a Christian but that is for God to decide. I don't think your crazy and I don't think your wrong for voicing your opinion. I disagree with how you feel but that makes neither of us wrong or right. (in my opinion). Pentecostals were raised to not watch tv period and so on anything remotely "evil" my parents were so stuck on that idea that when my sister started reading the Harry potter series they made such a big deal of it that it ruined our family literally. I am not saying it's Harry potters fault I am saying that something was taken to far out of context and made a mess of something so small. If you feel the twilight books r evil then that is a perfect tool for the devil to get you with but that does not mean it will effect everyone. The devil does not pick a specific thing to destroy everyone with he will pick whatever hits you personally and twist your mind into seeing other things. He is as wise as a serpent. That makes everything in this world a potential to be evil. The Bible itself can be misinterpretted and made evil not bc the Bible is evil but the devil can make you think or see things the way he wants you too. Vampires are not real, our idea of witches r not real tho I believe witchcraft is. Werewolves r not real tho there is an actual medical syndrome called "werewolf syndrome" that cause people to have an excess amount of hair that does not make them evil it makes the way our mind think evil. Disney movies can be turned evil every where u look something can be made evil. And excuse me but sex can be made evil but that is somethig God himself made for humans and animals to do naturally it is the devil twisting humans minds that make it evil. We see cannibalism as evil yet some animals are naturally cannibals that does not make them evil what makes cannibalism evil is the way humans think the reasons behind the cannibalism.and no I am not a cannibal. People should not be dogging you for your beliefs and in know way am I trying to do that to you I am expressing my opinion to you in the same way you did me. I disagree in telling my child abt Santa clause not bc he's evil but bc I feel that you cant tell a person to believe in Santa and God without seein them and later tell them Santa wasn't real but God still is. That makes no one evill and I don't push that on other people but that is my personal belief there is nothing wrong for those I hope my words encourage for the fact that I don't agree with you but I still respect and understand you and I hope you can do the same for me. Natalie

  138. Thank you Natalie, I do very much appreciate your comment! I completely understand not everyone agreeing with me and having their own opinions, I do respect you very much for how you expressed yours though. Just as how I have never used this blog to push this issue down anyone's throat, I appreciate when people reply to me in a likewise manner.
I will agree with you on some of the issues you stated about being raised Pentecostal. I feel it is all about your personal relationship with Jesus Christ instead of your denomination or religious beliefs. Too many people get caught up in all that. Just live by the Bible. I too have seen things in this denomination that I do not agree with, who am I to say if they were true or not, I just worry about myself. But once again I am glad you wrote to me, thank you! :)

  139. Hi Meag,
I am glad to have run across this blog as I was reading an article by Berit Kjos on the Twilight Series. I have had this burden on my heart for awhile and can't shake it as I know so many women and young girls think even as a christian that it is OK to read this. As we grow in the faith and are obedient to what God tells us to do, he brings us more revelation as to who he is and how much he really loves us. I have 2 daughters and praying always for them to truly be saved. It is a blessing to read your testimony as God is calling his true army to gird up daily for this battle as these days are becoming increasingly evil. I would like to share this on facebook.
    God Bless

  141. Meag,
I just read this post which was linked from another site (http://crossroad.to/articles2/08/twilight.htm). I wanted to tell you how much I appreciate your sweetness, sincerity, and honesty. And I am impressed and encouraged at all the scripture references you used. That was awesome!

I relate to your story, not with Twilight (I'd rather read Bram Stoker) but with CDs I had bought in highschool. God told me to throw them away, but I tried to sell them. It turned out much the same way your story did, only I never had anything "weird" happen.

I also appreciate your sharing about spiritual warfare, as it isn't something you here many young people talk about.

Lastly, give your mom a big hug for her patient prayers, wisdom, and discernment!

Here's my blog if you are interested, and a related post:

"I read an article a little while back that drew parallels between the "modern vamp" and godhood. New vampires are not scary, are not necessarily destroyers of people, may have eternal souls, possess supernatural abilities (mind-reading, seeing the future, etc.), are much stronger (super-hero like), faster, sexier, beautiful, never age, and rarely die.

Whereas witches and wizards must learn their spells over time, do not have superhuman strength, and will age and die (eventually), the modern vampire can instantly possess all the aforementioned abilities.

Oh, here's another! If you are romantically involved with a "vamp" (I guess the additional "ire" is just too cumbersome to write or say anymore) and they are essentially a god/goddess, is that like saying you now have a personal relationship with a god?" 144. Thank you Meag! I know it's years after you wrote this, and I'm almost 13 now, but I had sone insight to share. (I'm not "okaying" twilight or anything, but team Jacob! Here's the analogy:
Edward is evil. And evil will leave you hanging high and dry with no explanation (just like he does in new moon). And good comes along and is ready to wait for you no matter how long it takes. Jacob would live Bella even after she's a vampire. But we don't always want good. So evil comes back, and we take it right away because it's more appealing right?
Well, New Moon is the only book in the series that I'll support because of my analogy above. And I don't think the books were well written at all (I write myself, have a whole manuscript that I probably will never publish) and I was never really hooked. I finished the last book because I had to so my friend could read it. It is fiction. It IS just a book. But we let it become so much more. Stop. Yes, Bella screwed up. She made the worst decision she could make. But there is you example of what NOT to do. I still listen to some of the music, but not as "oh this is twilight, I gotta hear this!" no. Some of the songs are just good songs and the just happen to only be sold on the twilight album which really sucks, but yeah.
So that's my story. Thanks, Meag for sharing yours. I got the books out of my life. Unfortunately, my mom kept them. :)

  145. Good article. I'm not going to watch the last movie nor will I watch any of them ever again and I've asked my wife (who got me into them in the first place) to do the same. I suppose you can say it's my duty to COMMAND her to abstain from these books and movies, but I'd prefer not to go there right now.

What was the music you felt you had to stop listening to?

  147. It is normal to experience creepy things when you become obsessed with something. I could probably form a powerful argument about all knind of things i've been obsessed with being evil. When i was watching 3 Smallville episodes every day i kept having moments when i felt like i was Clark Kent. And whenever i stay up late at night reading vampire diaries and listening to Sum 41 i start hearing strange noises and feeling my bed rattle. But that's all easily explained. If you're emmersing yourself in a particular character's characteristics everyday you are bound to start noticing when you act even slightly like them. As for the bed rattling i was just reading a bit of the book a bit like the exorcist with all these possesed children who creep towards you like lizards when you weren't looking. I was freaking myself out. The music was making me hear things that weren't there.
Also you waking up like that could have been guilt. I'm more freaked out by shows i'm not allowed to watch. Period.

I wanted to share with you how moved I was after reading your blog. You have been a confirmation to me that Jesus has indeed given me a ministry, in the form of a story, for the youth of the nation and maybe the world's youth. Your writing and use of scripture is excellent! I wrote an ebook called The Sleeper(Flowers In The Shroud Trilogy)because of a divine inspiration after praying for a few hours on Christmas Eve 2011. My heart is breaking for the girls and guys drowning in creatures and war games. I made my own mistakes with the war games my son played through out his teens, but I am awake now and I wanted you to know that your honesty, set me like a stone and I will press on toward the high calling for the youth of our world. I am new to the blogging world, and I did share your story on my facebook page for The Sleeper, which is also a learning experience for me as well...Thank you for being real and giving testimonie for Gods saving power. Sincerly, Anne Young

Clearly these people above are disillusioned by the world we live in, because that is what the devil does, he blinds us, making things look harmless when at the source of them is evil. God does not like ANY form of magic, even if it is perceived as 'white magic'. Also Stephanie Meyer is a Mormon which is highly religious and not pleasing to God.

Your blog post is great and I'm so glad you've shared this. I will be leading my small group in a session based on this, so thank you soooo much! x
